ART GALLERY AS A PUBLIC SPACE

ARCHITECTURE

A public space may be a gathering spot within the public realm that helps promote social interaction and a sense of community.
Public spaces are the living rooms, gardens and corridors of urban areas. They serve to extend small living spaces and providing areas for social interaction and economic activities, which improves the development and desirability of a community.
Despite their importance, public spaces are often poorly integrated or neglected in planning and urban development. Public spaces as an important social infrastructure should be considered as a basic service, with the same priority as the infrastructure of transport, water and sanitation etc., which communities and local governing bodies often primarily focus on.

On the other hand, Art galleries are thought to have potential for societal education and uplift. They kindle the sense of interaction. Art galleries, as a resource in a public space enhance the communication not only amongst artists but actually between artists and the public and even within public domain. It is a place for artists aiming to work in the public realm.

Therefore, there is a need to build an Art Gallery in a social space which are extrovert in nature allowing interaction with public without any class or social difference. The interactive environment in the landscaped areas with seating arrangements, shaded and paved areas, play areas etc. enhance the communication between the public.
The architectural design I present addresses the concepts of interaction in a public space to achieve dynamism by applying the principles of Kinetic architecture. By means of flexibility and efficiency, this expanded dynamic process can generate direct engagement between the users and the environment that they interact with.
The capability for motion can be used to morph aesthetic qualities in space and time by responding to environmental conditions and emotional behaviours, within the contemporary theoretical and cultural context. and, perform functions that would be impossible for a static structure.
The level or hierarchy of enclosures is studied which introduces the gallery and exhibit spaces in the public park. This study explores the design potentials of kinetic architecture to achieve customized and variable user needs.
The focus of the study is there by aimed at providing a social space which serves as a platform for artists to communicate with the public and the fundamental understanding of the artist performance as the physical entity.
